As studnts head back to school many will end up as part of the 15 million dental injuries and 5 million cases of traumatically lost teeth that occur every year, according to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation. Many students chose not to wear a mouthguard for a variety of reasaons, for example they are not required for some sports like basketball or soccer, they impair breathing or speech and the cost for them come in a variety of prices. However, athletes that wear properly fitted mouthguards will find them to be comfortable.

Custom-made mouthguards are made with double layers of plastic protection for double defense while not decreasing the comfort. While the least expensive mouthguards are better than none, since most types of mouthguards help prevent injury to the mouth, teeth, lips, check, and tongue, they also minimize injury and decrease the severity of the injury from hits or falls.

Remember, if you lose a single tooth, it could cost you $10,000 - 20,000 over a lifetime to restore that tooth. According to the American dental Association, more than 2 million teeth are knocked out each year from sports-related injuries and mouthguards help prevent you from sustaining these injuries.

Types of Mouthguards:

Stock:  Least expensive choice with the least protection. Very difficult to breath or speak with.

Mouth-formed:  Available in most sports stores. Less expensive then custom-made guards but still not a good fit and wont last as long.

Custon-made:  Offers the best protection, fit, and comfort because it is made from a custom-made cast to fit teeth. You will be able to breath and speak freely. They cost a bit more but will last longer.
